Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) students are trained to be culturally competent physicians, researchers, and practitioners. While many students are informed by their own experiences with health disparities in the communities in which they grew up, all MSM students benefit from a robust curriculum that emphasizes representation.
Hence, the Global Health Interest Group (GHIG) - a group of MSM students seeking to understand and implement best practices through medical studies worldwide - is raising money to support the India Away Elective. The elective is an opportunity for MSM students to travel to Chennai, India for four weeks of intensive, hands-on learning, studying cultural taboos, feeding practices, and the fundamentals of Traditional Siddha Medicine (TSM). Students learn how to treat patients, integrating TSM with conventional medical practices. Basic principles include fundamental principles of body, pathophysiology of disease, classification of diseases, investigative parameters, and Siddha therapeutic approaches such as herbal therapy, Yoga, Varmam, etc.
An initial trip planned for 2020 was halted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, students raised over $2,000 during the first crowdfunding campaign which will now go towards the $10,000 goal to support two students who will travel to India for a month-long global learning experience in Fall 2024.
With your help, MSM student leaders of GHIG can provide fellow students with a global learning opportunity and continue growing support for important experiences like this one to further develop their cultural competency as healthcare leaders. Please consider making a donation today to support MSM students engage in global learning as they prepare to make an IMPACT and deliver on what Morehouse School of Medicine does best - lead in the advancement and creation of health equity to achieve health justice.
