Drs. Peter & Marlene MacLeish Endowed Lectureship

Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Drs. Peter and Marlene MacLeish Endowed Lectureship, to recognize MSM’s commitment to supporting brain science and to celebrate and honor the contributions Drs. Peter and Marlene MacLeish have made to advance education and scientific research at MSM.

Peter MacLeish, Ph.D was recruited to MSM in 1995 and subsequently honored as the George H.W. and Barbara Bush Professor of Neuroscience. His arrival marked the establishment of the Neuroscience Institute at MSM, and under his leadership as Founding Director, the Institute faculty members have received a total of 69 awards, including 50 NIH awards, totaling $77.6 million. Dr. MacLeish’s record of accomplishments also includes the establishment of a Department of Neurobiology and the expansion of the Specialized Neuroscience Research Program. The program received a U54 award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) to support neuroscience programs at a number of other minority institutions.

Marlene MacLeish, Ed.D is known for her international leadership as a spokeswoman for science education and health disparities research. She has published widely on STEM education and health disparities and taught at all levels of academia. Dr. MacLeish published The Brain in Space: A Teacher’s Guide with Activities for Neuroscience and is the executive producer of a six-part radio series, Biomedical Science for Space Travelers, and a documentary film, Exploring Two Frontiers: The Brain in Space, which aired on Public Broadcasting Services-USA.

To support the Drs. Peter and Marlene MacLeish Lectureship and to ensure its continuation, we are raising a $200,000 endowment. We have received several gifts that advance us toward that goal.  MSM will provide a $50,000 match to assist in establishing a high-profile lecture series that will bring outstanding biomedical scientists to the MSM campus and metro-Atlanta region. A major aim will be to continue the work of Drs. Peter and Marlene MacLeish by increasing the quality and impact of basic science research and education at our institution. Thank you in advance for joining with us in this opportunity to recognize the legacy of Drs. Peter and Marlene MacLeish and their impact on both MSM and the scientific and educational communities.
